Category is…Festive Trends 2022

As everyone knows, the single most important element of Christmas nostalgia is 8 Days of Christmas by Destiny’s Child. But we’d also like to start a new festive tradition – an annual gift guide trends snapshot from the team here at Untld Project.

You. Are. Welcome.

Here are five of our favourite press trends for Christmas 2022:

1. Sustainable, not seasonal

With the cost of living and conscious consumerism both front of mind and constantly in the news cycle, journalists compiling gift guides are increasingly keen to include gifts that can be used by the lucky recipient year-round. Keep this in mind and be sure to shout about your sustainability creds when pitching.

2. Long Live Indie Biz

OK, so we might have coined this phrase, but we’re thrilled to see more and more people sharing the mission. Some titles will only feature gifts from major retailers (and they usually include Etsy and Not on the High Street within this category) but more and more journalists love to shout out small businesses and will include direct links to their site, so make sure you use the words ‘independent business’ somewhere in your press release and pitch.

3. Merry Craftmas

Now we are obviously (very) biased when it comes to craft because it’s something so close to our hearts, but based on our current conversations with journalists, the popularity of craft kits within gift guides shows absolutely zero signs of slowing down. Don’t take our word for it – have a quick Google to see how many craft kits were in gift guides last year. This year… it could be you!

4. Subscription Boxes

Absolute. PR. Dream. For the last few years, journalists have loved featuring these and they now actively ask for them when compiling their Christmas gift guides. As well as being a brilliant way to secure coverage, these bad boys can offer you a new monthly revenue stream to help with cashflow AND introduce new people (the lucky recipients) to your brand. Yes please! If budget allows, consider offering key journalists a 3/6/12 month gifted subscription as you’ll then be front of mind for them throughout 2023!

5. Advent Calendars

We wish we got a fiver for every time we told someone they should create a brand advent calendar if at all possible. Because quite frankly if we did, we would be absolutely minted. But until then we’ll bang on about them at every opportunity! They’re such a great way to secure coverage and even if you can’t create a full advent calendar, think about a ’12 days of Christmas’ gift as these are often also included in advent guides now.
